Lacquer performance.

- Lacquer performance (corrosion protection, adhesion, flexibility etc) and the factors that affect it have been the subject of many studies for several years. The topic, however, is still as relevant today, due to the changing specification of both tinplate and lacquers. Current study is investigating how lacquer formulation interacts with processing variables (curing temperature and time) to affect performance.

Corrosion inhibitors.

- Tinplate packaging, particularly with low tin coating weights, can be subject to unsightly corrosion when used with damp, humid conditions. The use of a chemical treatment applied to the outside of the can could potentially reduce or prevent rust. A successful treatment has been identified, which is also resistant to abrasion. Research is underway to identify where how the treatment could be made in the can making / filing process, and the involved costs. Potential application is envisaged for food, beverage and aerosol packaging.

Product differentiation - holographic imaging

- Holographic images are finding increased usage, particularly on special promotional packaging. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to produce the hologram directly on the tinplate surface, The potential of this technology in tinplate packaging is being explored.

Electrolyte survey.

- Electrolytic tinplate production has for many years been predominantly via either the halogen or ferrostan processes. New electrolytes e.g. MSA-bases, are now available and others are known to be in development.
